Frequently Asked Questions - AIP Self Weeding Transfer Paper
If you are our customers using or tried this product or if you are thinking to use this product, here are some useful information for you regarding how to use our paper.
Can I use regular dye or pigment based inkjet ink with this transfer paper?
Not at this time. You will have to use sublimation ink with this product. We have tried to use regular pigment ink and the results are not good in most cases.
Can I use this transfer paper with black T-shirts?
No. When a photo or image has white or light color spots, such as human faces or light color objects, if (C+M+Y+K)% < 60%, those spots are probably hardly have any ink traces on the printout. In this case, there will be no or very little transfer for those spots, therefore being weeded out (remember only the printed portion sticks to shirts). If your T-shirt is light color, this will not be a problem. But it would not look good on dark to black background.
Do you provide detailed instructions for use of this paper?
Yes, we will include a printed copy of the detailed instructions in the package. You can also request the latest version of this guide from us. We will email to you the PDF file.
Do I have to use your heat-resistant high-density foam pad?
You do not have to use this foam pad if you can find the best combination of temperature, time and pressure. For best result, however, we strongly recommend you use it. This layer of high-density foam can ensure 100% contact between T-shirt (or other substrate) and transfer paper and platens, better retaining heat, as well as help to eliminate the yellowish stain by reducing the pressure caused by hard surface of platens. See the Accessories page for more info about this product.
Why is there yellow stain on my transferred T-shirts?
The probable causes are: temperature too high and/or time too long or both, and more likely, pressure too high (due to hard surface of platens). Our extensive experiments have shown that the yellow stains can be eliminated by using our recommended heat-resistant high-density foam. This foam can reduce the pressure and at the same time ensure 100% contact.
Is the transferred image stretchable?
Yes, after the first wash. Because some ingredients in the coating form sticky layer when heat transferred to T-shirts, the newly transferred image may crack if you stretch it. However, after the first wash or soaked in water, the ink will settle into the fabrics and unwanted gelatinous chemical is dissolved in the water. From then on, it is stretchable just like any other quality transfer paper.
Why is my image not completely transferred to T-shirt?
There could be a number of reasons:
| |
| Cause |
|
Correction |
| | | |
| T-shirt is not placed flatly on the plate |
|
Place T-shirt flatly on the bottom platen and in the middle. |
| | | |
| Top and bottom platens are not tightly closed due to low pressure, especially where close to plate edges |
|
1. Increase the pressure as much as possible. 2. Place a heat-resistant high-density foam on top of the bottom platen and place your T-shirt on top the foam. |

| Printed image on transfer paper is left for too long |
|
Do the heat transfer immediately after the image is printed. We recommend you do the transfer within 5 minutes. The sooner, the better. According to our experiment, if it's left for more than 20 minutes, the transfer result will look bad. |
| | | |
| Temperature is too low and/or time is too short Try to find the best combination of temperature and time settings. |
|
Generally, within our recommended setting range, slightly higher temperature and longer time produce better result. |
| | | |
| Hot peeling is done too later |
|
After the transfer timer is off, you should take out the T-shirt together with the transfer paper, and immediately peel off the base in one single smooth operation. |
| | | |
| Hot peeling is not done right: too much force, or not in consistent force |
|
This step is very important. When you peel off the base, start from one corner and then peel off in one single gentle, smooth operation. |
| | | |
| The amount of the ink printed onto the transfer paper is too low |
|
Use our recommendations above when printing: select Heavyweight (paper type), Best Photo (Quality Option). |
|
| |
Why is non-printed area transferred to my T-shirt?
The probable cause is either temperature too high or time is too long, or both.
Why do the edges of paper sometimes cause stain on my T-shirts?
Possible causes include uneven coating or pressure along the edges or ink contamination. The stain looks like a solid or dotted line in yellow to dark color. To avoid this edge stains on your transfer, use a scissors to cut out the edges after you print out the image.
